at what point does USCIS do the namecheck?

At what point does the USCIS initiate namechecks (for I-485 cases)? Is this immediately after they get the FP (#1) back or can there be some delay before they ask for it? Maybe they start it at the same time as the FP?

I'm wondering because it sounds like it's a good idea to make sure that the namecheck has cleared or it could hold up your case for a long time, but it would help to know when the USCIS is likely to initiate the namecheck...

From my experience I can say name-check seems to be done immidiatly after you file I-485. For me I filed I-485 in 09/2003 and my namecheck (as per email from FBI) was completed on 10/2003.

Can u please let me know how to find if name-check is done? My 485 were filled on March 2004 and FP not yet done.

Ah -- so I guess this would mean that for most people, their namecheck should generally be cleared (unless there's a hit against the FBI database) within a month or so of filing the I-485?

already called -- best to send fax

FYI, I just called the number in the doc that siva mentioned (202-324-3625) and asked what I needed to do to check on the status of a name check that was done for me as part of my GC process.

The woman I spoke to (she answered after 1 ring) pretty much echoed everything that is in the doc that siva posted. She said to send them a fax at 202-324-3367 with your full name, date of birth, alien # and a way to contact you (preferably email or fax). She said they are currently several weeks behind with their status processing.

Just thought that mentioning this might save people here the trouble of phoning themselves.

Not always.

Name check is not initiated as soon as I485 is applied. In my case there is no record of USCIS make a name check request with FBI. It is almost nearing 18 months past I485 RD.

Who knows I might have qualified for International Security clearance (Australian and Canadian agencies.....) It is a mysterious black box.
 
Regarding Name check, do they e-mail the status of name-check if we wnated like so. Bcos I don;t want them to fax the results (i use companes fax).

Yes, you can give them an email address for the results.
