Hi,

I came to US last year in 2009 on J1 Visa from Pakistan. I have applied for asylum on religious grounds due to past threats of persecution & future grounds for persecution. I think my case is pretty solid.
I sent my asylum application on March 25th & received interview notice on April 6th & acknowledgment receipt on April 12th in mail. My date of filing on receipt is mentioned as April 2nd. Interview date I got is April 26th.
Since, my J1 status & stipend from university is ending this month, I am a little confused about how to legally work here until I get decision on my asylum case. I know I can't get EAD right now. So my main question is, can I work freelance legally?
I am a software engineer, so I can get some freelance work on site or remotely, but is it illegal ?
