asylum and citizenship

I was approved for asylum in September of 2000, and I
applied for my green card in February of 2002. But I
know that it will take another 8-10 years (as per INS
website) before I get my greencard. Do I have to wait
another five years after getting my greencard to apply
for US citizenship? That would make it 13-15 years from
now.

I wish I have better news fro you but you will only backdated a year once you get your green card. That is once you get your green card, instead of waiting 5 years to apply for citizenship, you will have to wait 4. Big deal huh. It is still a screwed up system. See it is different if you landed as a refugee. They count from the day you land to determine your eligibilty for citizenship. Oranges and apples here.

Remember that you waited a whole year after being granted asylum to apply for the green card. They compensate you for this year I guess.

simple

It is five years after the effective date of your permanent resident card. Since asylum-based green card is backdated one year, in reality you wait for four years.
