Is it possible while an application is pending, and an EAD has been granted for the applicant to start his/her own income generating small home business? Or does the EAD only allow such an applicant awaiting case outcome to work in a regular job? Anyone have any ideas on this matter?

Of course, you can start your own business.

the only thing u need is applying a
1. fictitious business name (usually with county clerk);
2. seller's and resales permit (this requires u to provide ur ssn);
3. and finally bring 1 & 2 plus ur application for business to ur city hall, asking for approval of business license.
Forming an Incorporation or Partnership may requires u to provide signed Articles of Incorporation or Partnership Agreement.
