I am doing I-485 myself and have almost all the documents ready.
Since there are lots of documents, I wonder should I
punch hole on the top of the documents and bind all the paper together, also, I've heard that the order of the document is very important. Anyone has experience with how to assembling documents for INS filing? I am sure lawyer will know, but I don't want to hire a lawyer just for this

Or any suggestions about whether or not should hire lawyer for I-485, in case there are potential problem?

filing i485 is one of imporatant thing. dont take risk of making any mistake in either filling the form or handling the supporting documents. its better to spend some dollars to get help from good attorney and file it and be safe.

provide enough details about your case. why did you choose to file i485 yourself? what category? or you filing as eb1? how about i140?

If you want to have a list of forms and docs that are needed for I-485 there are plenty of posts in this forum form where I got all the info., help and confidence to do this myself! Last week, I filed AOS for myself and my daughter based on my spouse's approved I-140 and concurrent I-485.

Please take a look at this BCIS website for information on assembling your I-485 application. I found it very useful
http://www.bcis.gov/graphics/fieldoffices/vermont/aboutus.htm#anchorPREPARE

While you are at that site also look at procedures for mailing your applicaitons and where to attach the checks etc. All the forms (I-765, I-131 etc) are now available in fillable format if you browse through here:
http://www.visapro.com/US-Immigration-Forms.asp

I have to say this, its much easier to use a lawyer but your pockets will also be much lighter! So it depends on your circumstances, whether you want to do it yourself or have a lawyer do it for you! What with the fillable forms and the helpful BCIS website, its my opinion that there has never been a better time to file I-485 ourselves.

Generally when lawyers file it they make the punch hole(s) at the bottom of the page, so that all the documents go in a file easily. The important thing is to label every page with the primary A#, document type and purpose and name of the applicant relevant to.
Dont forget the cover letter that summarizes the list of docs underneath.
