An LPR needs to travel abroad and take care of his hospitalized parent. He has never applied for Reentry Permit and stayed abroad over 6 months since becoming a permanent resident. If the trip will be more than 6 month but less than one year,

1) Is it necessary for him to apply for a Reentry Permit? If so,
2) How much time should be filled in the question of Expected Length of Trip in the Form I-131, just fill in the planned time or any time frame up to two years?

Thank you for your answer.

Reply to Applying in Re entry

1. If it less than a year, let's say 11month or less. It is okay not to get a re-entry.
2. But if you are not sure how long will he take to stay there, just for assurance, apply for re-entry.
Re entry application may take 1-3months. It depends on your place. Or you may request an expedite mail for a faster process.
3. It is okay to fill 2years, that's the maximum years they give to a re-entry document.
