Yes, u ought to have a valid unexpired EAD to be able to work (assuming u r indeed using EAD and not H1B for work). Or u should have filed for renewal before it expired.
 
No, you're not out of status. You're in a valid status
while AOS is pending.

You do however need an EAD to work legally if you're
not on an H1b. If you are working on an EAD and it has
expired, you are working illegally. You can get an interim
EAD permit issued from a local INS office, just to get you legal
again.

But this doesn't affect your status of being here in the country.
 
To get Green Card you need to Continue Work

That means we become illegal anyway if we dont renew our EAD

To Clarify your confusion,

The Day you filed for I 485 you are legal in this country, even if it takes 20 years to get your approval (Just trying to make a point).

EAD is no proof of status, it is only an authority for you to be employed while your I 485 is pending.
