Dear All,
I am a new Research Fellow at a non profit organization on an H1 visa which is not capped. I am being told that my H1 visa is different from a regular H1 visa and that it has restricted domains of working. I also see the letter 'R' before 'H1B' typed on my visa. My questions are-

1. am i on restricted H1 which could mean that i cannot change my employer or eligible for H1 transfer. i ask this question as i am wanting to shift into industry.

2. secondly, even if my H1 visa is of regular type or restricted, am i allowed to do part time work for few hours at places likes banks, hotels etc.,

i would highly appreciate your kind response and advice

Regards
Raj

1. You can change employer as long as there are H1bs available. Your current H1b did not count towards the numerical limits set for the fiscal year. When you want to change to an industry job you will count towards the yearly available pool so an H1b needs to be available. For the fiscal year 2006 starting on October 1 65K H1bs are available. You can apply starting from April 1 for a start date of October 1 (six months in advance). Please note that these H1bs run out very fast so you should secure a job (and sponsor) in the next few months to be safe. Note also recent news about an additional 20K H1bs made available for the current fiscal year. But nothing has been decided about those yet.

2. When on H1b you are only allowed to work for the company that sponsored your visa. No exceptions.

You can do, if the bank or hotel provide you another h1 (Concurrent H1).

i would highly appreciate your kind response and advice

Thanks Billy Bob & Great Guru,
from ur replies, i conclude-
1. that there is only kind of H1 visa, irrespective of obtaining it from capped or uncapped institutions...hence in principle if i get another job willing to sponsor i would be eligible for H1 transfer which i believe is a lot easier than applying afresh!
2. i would need a concurrent H1 visa if i plan to do any other job, even if part time.

that was very informative. thanks once again
