Approval when Outside of country

I wanted to know if the GC is approved when the person is outside of country. What is the situation when Advance Parole is valid for couple of months when GC is approved. Should they use AP or GC to comeback?

Is it legal to stay outside of country even after AP is expired and re-enter with GC as GC is approved(left country with valid AP)?
