Applying N-400. I’m not working, but preparing to start a Business. Unemployed or Self-Employed?

I’m not working for 4 years. This is because, I’ve decided to take time-off from work after getting my Green Card. And I’m trying to change my career paths from employment to business. I’ received my Green Card in Employment Category.

I’m preparing for starting a business. However, It is taking time for Educating, planning, investment etc...
Currently I’m not working for any Company. But at home I’m preparing doing market research, educating myself etc...

Hence I’m not making any income. But I’m filing taxes (even when I’m not making any Income) every year.

I’m not taking Unemployment benefits, but enrolled in Affordable Care Act, which is legal and mandatory when I started. I’m still continuing that. I’m not taking Medicaid etc..or filed for unemployment.

I’m trying to start a business, meaning I’ll be self-employed.

Question: Should I put ‘Self-Employed’ or ‘Unemployed’ In N-400 Application ?

If I put ‘Unemployed’, does it adversely affect my case?
If I put ‘Self-Employed’, is it incorrect?

You are currently unemployed. Your business is not yet up and running, so you can’t claim to be self employed.

Thank you very much for replying.

Does self-employed mean, I should be making income ?

In my opinion, self employed implies you are earning (or actively trying to earn) an income. That doesn’t apply to you now. Possibly, you will be properly self-employed by the time you interview.

Earning an income is not a requirement to become a citizen.

They may ask how you have been funding yourself, given that you have not worked for four years - I guess more to ensure that you have been honestly filling in tax returns/haven’t been engaged in illegal activity, etc.

Tax filing on no income is simple. If I received, even $100 from a bank as taxable interest, it can be reported in tax filing. Hence I filed a tax, even when not working regularly.

However my question is, does ‘Unemployed ‘ a factor for Approval.

Yes I understand that, you missed my point entirely.

Thank you SusieQQQ, I take it you are saying that Stating’Unemployed’ is not an issue, if I’m not doing any wrong activity
