Applying for TN visa and moving

Hi all
I have looked at this forum and couldn't get the clear answers. So I would like to ask you a question.
I am actually waiting for the TN petition letter from my company. And I plan to apply for TN visa 1st of Mar. But I plan send my personal stuff( books/toys for my kid/clothing) using UPS before I apply for TN visa. And UPS said that I need a valid visa to exempt the duties. But this is a contradiction since TN visa must be applied in order to start work. And my stuff is being sent before I apply for my visa. Would you please suggest any ideas... ? Thank you so much in advance. :)

Thank you. :)

1. go to the border and apply for TN
2. immediately return to canada
3. send your goods visa UPS with valid visa
4. re-enter the US and go to your new home.

While the TN letter must have a start date that is very near (same day in some cases) the date at which you apply for TN status, once the status has been approved there is no reason for you to not be able to return to Canada and get your stuff.

Hi Gunt

Thank you so much for your answer.
I would like to ask you one more question. When I go to border (eg. on 20th of Feb) would you please tell me how to answer when the officer asks me "are you going to work right now"? Actually, my starting date is 5th of Mar. But since I haven't received the TN petition letter, I don't know if my company put the starting date in the letter. Please help me here.. :)

Thank you so much for your time again. :)

Ideally the comapny should write the following on the letter:

Start date: "Immediately upon approval of TN status."

So, even I immediately return back to canada, would it be fine?

Thank you.

-- That's what I had done...Got TN, made a U turn into Canada to pack up my belongings. U seem to be from AB, if yes, go to port of piegan to get TN - that's where I got it and came back to pack up...

Hi bigboy00

Thank you so much. I am in Edmonton, AB. And I just got the TN - petition letter. I will go to the port you mentioned. :) One more question, after you returned back to Canada, how long did you stay in Canada before you entered US again?

Thank you so much again.
:) :)

Cool....I have some tips for you then....

First I will answer your question: I got my TN and came back to into Canada to pack up and to take care of misc things - like servicing the car - the last cdn servicing from Millwoods Honda! :) I stayed for 13 days in Canada after getting the TN and then left for the US.

Some tips: I got my TN from Port of Piegan which is about 5.5 hrs drive from Edmonton. The lady there looked stone faced, but was very nice. It was a while ago, but just thought of telling you (FYI).

My diploma (yes, from a cdn university) just said "Master of Science" but no faculty - (it did not say whether in civil engg/mech or electr engg). She asked me for my transcripts to verify the field of study. But I had a letter from grad studies with me (fortunately!!) that stated my degree and the field of study. It was gladly accepted (a copy). She did not mind when I told her that I am making a U-turn back into Canada to wind up the things.

Now, make sure that you have your diploma and something else (like a letter or your transcripts) to verify your field of study. Because I have seen a Ph.D. diploma from UofA that just stated "doctor of Philosophy" without stating the
specialization.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions..

Thank you bigboy00 again. :)

One more question, I heard that when I applied for the TN, I am expecting to provide a permanent address in Canada. How can I deal with this? since my all family are moving together (my wife and a kid). Please help me here. :)

Thank you again.

Yes, you can put a friend/relative's address.

Thank you. Thank you.... :)

But it comes to my attention regarding the date of TN visa application. The previous thread said, a new policy in BC ports has been implemented so that TN admission means just go to work. :)

I'd better make a call to Montana port. :) I will let you know you guys.

Thank you.

Just to be clear. The U-turn to get your stuff after you get the TN is not a given. I got a load of flak from the CBP after I did that. The rule is that you have to proceed immediately to work after your get the TN, no U-turns.
