Applying for SSN timeline (TN visa)

Hello, I will be going through customs with all my required documents.

I will be needing to apply for my SSN like everyone else.
I unfortunately will only be able to come to the states 4-5 days before I come to work.
I know I have to apply for my SSN, but do not need it right away to work (I read as long as the process is started it is not a problem)

I need advice. If I start work on the 10th and fly in 5 days before, what are you recommendations of getting my SSN done?

I just need direction.

Thank you in advance for your time.

You need to first decide which SSA office you will be going to, and likely have to make an appointment due to covid. It should be a few days after applying for TN at the earliest. So, you should probably make the appointment for sometime in those 5 days before working, in the city you will be living, and have an address they can mail it to. Then you wait for the SSN. The employer will either delay paying you, pay you a cash advance, or pay you with a "pending SSN" code . Review the SSN application form SS-5 now to see what you need.

Im actually in the same situation as you OP. I called a social security office and spoke to them apparently you can mail in your application + original documents (passport) to them to have it processed OR book an in person appointment, issue is that their really slow right now with reduced staff and covid. They quoted me a 60 day timeline! I'd recommend mailing in your application the day you land if you can, or book an appointment for the first week your there!

Also depending on which state your headed to you should check out the DMV requirements some require you to get a drivers license in 30 days and that requires a SSN in some states lol

I would NEVER send my passport to any agency if I had the opportunity to hand it in person and immediately get it back, That is document suicide! I would just make an appointment and go in person. by going in person, they will give you a reciept advising that you have appied. It'll take the time it takes. DMV will have to wait.
