Just received my employment authriazation card last week (married file in august ). How do I get a social security card? I have been trying to get some information from the web. Some sites tell me to go to the SS office to apply for one. Yet some say it will automatically come in the mail. I’m confussed which one is it? Should I wait or apply for one at a local office. All my paper work was file by my lawyer and he is can’t be reached till the end of the holiday.

Also I have been here for 19 years. I just found out that a long time ago I was given a non work SSN. Should I inform SS of the old number or they will do it automatically? If so will I be given a new card with thwe same number but with out the stamp “Not for work” ?

Regards

How hard is it to just browse the website for Social Security ... www.ssa.gov?

I mean I got my employment card (called EAD by the way) not so long ago, visited the website and figured out what I had to do. I'm not a genius.

In short, you go to the local Social Security office, fill out an application, show proof of age, identity, and eligibility (passport+EAD is more than enough).... and they will send u a new card that says "Valid only with DHS authorization" or something like that.

They will probably give u a new card with the same number.

Looks like you're a newbie to the site just like me. Welcome and congrats on getting your work permit! Feel free to send me a private message if you don't feel comfortable posting a follow up to your question. I've learned so much from this site and have gotten really good insight and suggestions.

They only issue new numbers under specific circumstances. If you already have a ss# they will use the same one by making changes such as status, name, address etc. The card should automatically come in the mail after you have submitted your application.

"Question
When I first applied for a Social Security card, I was issued a card that says, "Not Valid for Employment". I now have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Will I be issued a different number, or will I have to apply to adjust my current number?

Answer
If you are now a U.S. citizen or if the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has granted you a change in status so you now can work in the U.S., you must apply for a replacement card.
To apply for a replacement card, first complete Form SS-5. You can get that form by:

Downloading it at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html;
Calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778); or
Visiting your local Social Security office.

In addition, you must provide evidence of your identity as well as proof of your U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work from DHS. Alternately, you can use your immigration document as evidence of both your identity and authorization to work in the United States. Your documents must be originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies-not even if they are notarized.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, we will verify your documents with the DHS. Most of the time, we can verify your documents online quickly. We work closely with DHS to minimize delays. If we cannot verify your documents online with DHS, we may take longer to issue you a new card."
