Applying for green card extension.

Can someone please advise if it is possible to apply for an extension on residing in the US after being granted a green card in the lottery.

I won a green card in the lottery which was issued to me on my last trip to the US (5 months ago)
Due to current work commitments and training requirements I am unable to reside in the US, is it possible to obtain an extension to this and if so what is the process.

Why did you get a green card if you don't intend to live here?

If you stay outside the U.S. for more than a year without a re-entry permit, you lose your green card. Even more than 6 months will lead to questions.

You can apply for a re-entry permit, which will allow you to stay outside for up to 2 years, but you must send in the application when you are physically in the U.S.

If you are outside US now get in touch with embassy or consulate immediately. Its been 5 months since the lottery already.
