Applying for GC in Atlanta & leaving US during processing

I am a US citizen and I plan on marrying a S. Korean. He is here on an education visa. I know we would need to file all the paperwork/forms and that would start the process. Then, I know to leave the country another form (I 131) would need to be filed. Would leaving the country for a few months (both of us to visit his family) severely disrupt the application process for a green card?
Also, does anyone know (from personal experience or anything, I suppose) how long the application process takes to receive a green card in Atlanta? My fiance found a website that mentioned something like 380 days, but I wasn't quite sure what this referred to, as it was in Korean.
Thank you in advance.
