I am currently working in US on H1 visa. I came to US for my Masters on f1 visa and then converted to H1. My sister is applying for her F1 visa this week. She has a full scholarship from a very good school.

1) What is her chance of getting a visa if she mentions that I am living in US?
2) Does US consulate in India verify sibling information before granting a visa? Some people have recommended us to omit this information from the application.

Do not hide any information from the Consulate. Your sister should tell the truth about yourself. Problem comes only if the sibling in the US is living illegally or has committed fraud. I don't think this is the case and hence not to worry. If any problem contact me on xxxxxxx

Do not get trapped by Unscrupulous people

Your sis have 50/50 chances to get F1. However if F1 got rejected, no one can help you.
There are unscrupulous people soliciting in this forum, as if they can get you F1 visa. Be careful, no one can help you including "acvakil". If he can help you let him tell how can he help you in this forum , so that every one get benefitted.

hi,
im also in the same situation as ur sister.
my sister is in the US,and now a GC holder.
But she went to US as a dependant, and now she works.

Not disclosing sibling information can be risky, coz if we get caught, then we will be barred from entering US forever.

Please let me know what ur sister decides.

Update from my sister

I was able to talk to someone (not an American consular but an Indian who is employed by the embassy) who actually works in Mumbai consulate and she recommended not hiding the details. You have to fill out your family information on form D-157. Sometimes consular may decide to send your application for background check which can really ruin your application if you hide information. So we decided to provide all the family details and go with the risk of getting rejected. My sister called me today and she was able to get her F1 visa without any problems. I have included a brief summary of all the questions she was asked:

1) Which school is she joining?
2) How did she apply to this school?
3) did she apply to other schools?
4) Why did she pick this particular one?
5) Brief summary of research topic during her education in US?
6) Proof of GRE, and TOEFL
7) Degrees and transcripts from indian eductional institutions
8) Her plan after completing her education

and voila she got it..

Could you tell us what happened to your F1 visa. Providing feedback will help others in the forum, just as you have benefitted from info here. Thanks
