Applying for a second TN

My husband has the opportunity to take on another consulting project. He's currently on a TN. Given our location, it is difficult to get to the border so he's wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get the necessary TN for the second company without going to the border. Can he go to immigration at the airport, for example, or does he absolutely have to go to a land crossing?

He does not absolutely have to go to a land crossing - and he can do it at an airport. BUT, he has to get it while "entering" the US at a POE, whether land or air. That means that if he goes to an airport, he would have to fly out of the US and then on his return trip back into the US he can get his TN.

I know even at a land crossing, you have to physically leave the US and reenter to get a new TN.

I tried that once at Detroit a few years ago. I drove to Detroit and parked in the parking lot just before I went over the bridge and stepped over the guard rail and went into the US Customs office and they kicked me out and told me that I had to physically leave the country and re-enter to try to get my TN redone. I imagine that the same thing would be true at the airport. You actually have to be "inspected" upon admission into the US.

People in FL have had success getting a TN on the way back from a one-day cruise to bahamas.

What sucks is that we'd have to drag our two kids along to do it, since our daughter and I need TD to go along with his new TN since ours would expire before his otherwise. Or can we send in for our TD once he has the second TN? Our son was born here, lucky bugger.

Maybe I should just call and find out. I can never get through to anyone helpful though.

Why would you need your TD updated at that moment? Your TD has not expired and your spouse still has a valid TN.

At some point later, you can get TD, either by mail or when he applies for his TN renewal for the first job (remember, he will still need to do this).

Besides, who are you going to call? USCIS help lines are notoriously ignorant of cdn matters.

If you are going to leave the country and re-enter through Mexico, make sure you phone the Immigration Office at that border crossing and determine if you need to make an appointment to have your TN reviewed. Many times the immigration officers processing TNs are not always available.

It would be horrible for you to show up and be told that there is no one to process your application until later or worse the next day.

Good Luck!

Okay. New issue. He has decided that if he gets the TN for the second job, he won't continue with the first. Does that mean my daughter and I will have to go to the border too? I'm guessing it does.

If your TD is still valid, you don't need to get new TD until it nears expiry -- i explained this already. It does not matter what TN he has as long as he has one: the TD is based on HIS TN status, not a specific TN

You would have had to go soon anyways, since TD #1 was about to expire, so might as well go along for the new one now.
