applying for a duplicate green card

Is it a bad idea to apply for a duplicate permanent resident card just for back up purpose? In other words, can we re-apply saying we have lost the orginal one? will this process cancel our orginal plastic card?

You may be able to do it, but it is not worth the risk of lying for it. I don\'t understand why you are so concerned of it being lost.

Note that SRC# is present on the card and will change if you apply for new card.

It\'s just like a credit card

If you apply for one extra one pretending that you
have lost the original, then the original one is
canceled automatically.

In the GC, the SRC/WAC number etc is present.
That\'s the case number for the greencard production.
Once you apply for a new one, that case number is
invalidated. If you present the old GC to an INS
official, he will swipe it in his computer and find
that it\'s not valid.

Are you sure? On my card, that number is my I-485 case
number

Duplicate GC.

We received two Green cards with in a period of 2 weeks, I think its a mistake by INS, but still both the cards look exactly same.
