Applying asylum without Passport used to enter USA

What will be the consequences if asylum in USA is applied without a passport to show to the Government with which entry to USA is made?

Yes you will be asked about how you entered the USA during your hearing. I too did not enter with my NP when I cam to this great country. I had to explain how I got in and everything surrounding my entry.
