Apostillation of passport for PIO card

I was planning to submit form for PIO card for my minor son at SanFrancisco consulate. I see a requirement of apostilled copy of the passport. How can I get apostilled copy of the passport?

On the other hand , I was planning to go in person and apply for the card. In that case do I need to take my son along with me ? (In other words is the physical presence of the person applying for the PIO card required ?)

Just FYI.
I found that apostillation is a complicated and costly process. So I ended up driving to SFO.
I didn't have to take my Son with me and id the whole stuff in less than 45 minutes.
