AP vs H1 question? Urgent pls help

Hi,
I have used AP to re-enter US and wondering if i must use EAD to work or not since i used AP. Though i have a valid visa H1 extension but didn't get a visa stamping in my passport when i was in India. Since i don't have a valid H1 visa in my passport, do i need to use EAD to work or stay on H1? At the port of entry the immigration officer wrote "AOS" on my H1 visa in the passport.
Does it mean i am no longer on H1 visa and i must use EAD to work? Could anyone please advise me....

simplification

It will be simplify if you used EAD. however if
1. you are with your sponsoring employer and
2. H1 extension was granted from previous h1 expiry

u have the option of reverting back to h1.
I keep wondering why people want to go back to h1 after using AP...
