AP:spouse case slower than main case?

we applied AP 3/10 and today my case was approved (my 485 got approved in between) but my spouse's AP, which is more relevant since her 485 was not approved yet, was still no progress.

is it normal that the companion cases were not approved at the same time?

It is very normal. When you and your spouse applied for I-485, EAD and AP, each case is considered separate. For sure I-485's derivative application will not be approved unless the principal get approved first. The EAD and AP is another story, each one approved independent from the other. For I-485, I read quite many posts with gap between principal and spouse up to many years.
