I have a valid AP which expires in Dec. If I file a renewal AP while I am abroad in Sep or Oct and gets approved before the expiry date of my current AP, can I still come back using my current AP? Do I risk losing I-485 status by filing a renewal AP while abroad? Please help.

You can come back within the validity period of your current AP even of your renewal granted or denied.

Is it okay to apply for AP renewal while abroad? Thanks a lot for your reply.

No you can not renew it while abroad. You can file a form, sign it and someone here can send it to the USCIS while you are abroad. The point is, It is not allowed to be mailed to you overseas and you should be in US before you use it to return back
Example
your current AP expire 12/1/07
You travelled 10/1/07
your renewal granted from 11/1/07 (and mailed to you abroad or not mailed)
You have to come back before 12/1/07 with the old AP
If you come after 12/1/07 to the best of my knowledge, you can not use the new AP. Waiting for others feedback.

The situation I am facing is that I seek to work abroad but in the meantime keeping my I-485 status. My current AP won't expire until Dec, so I am safe as long as I come back before then. However, I intend to come back only for a very short period to pick up the renewal AP approval and resume working overseas ASAP. That's why I am asking whether it is possible to apply for the renewal while I am still abroad (of course I can find sb. to mail the filing for me in US). From what I read, the safest way is to be in US while filing for the renewal, but it means an additional trip for me. Do you think I can save that trip? Will USCIS check whether I am in the States or abroad while filing the renewal?
