AP renewal overlaps

Perhaps you all knew this already but I didn't.

We applied 5 months in advance for my wife's EAD and AP
renewals. It actually took 2 months for them to be approved
(VSC).

The new EAD starts when the old one expires (August)
and goes out to August 2005. The AP however is valid
only for one year from the date of approval, ie May.

How annoying that is. Since there is no way to know
within 3 months one way or the other how long it will
take to approve an AP application, erring on the side
of caution loses you 2-3 months of validity a year.

So don't apply too early for your AP renewals unless
you have travel plans which cannot be changed and you
have to guarantee you will have it in hand in time.

-----That is correct, what is the problem??????

-----AP is always valid for 1 year from approval date. what is the problem???

no problem with that at all. That's what I expected.

The problem with that is, the old Advance Parole ran for the same year as
the original EAD, August to August. I had expected that the new one would
also start, like the EAD does, when the old one ran out, so that too would
go August 2004 to August 2005. However it doesn't, it goes from the date
of approval for one year. So there is now a little stub period from May 2005
to August 2005 where we have to get yet another one.

Since the processing times are so random, you can't easily guess when to
file to get the APs to run continuously, ie get the new one just as the old
one runs out. So if you want to have AP always on hand, you're often going
to apply too early (like we did) and end up only really getting 9 months off
the old one.

That's so stupid, what's the experience with other folks who applied earlier?
