AP renewal 120 day rule - strict?

How strict is the 120 day rule for renewing AP (i.e. you cannot apply for renewal of AP before there are 120 days or less until current AP expires)? I've read some places that the rule is relaxed, and that it applies to other forms of I-131 travel documents, and not AP. Anyone has experience of applying for AP renewal more than 120 days early?

I have AP valid until Aug 2009, and want to apply for renewal in Jan. Problematic?

MY EAD was rejected cuz I applied 140 days before expiration. I would expect same for ap

I don not think so, This role MAY apply for EAD only.
