He suggested that i can use my H1 visa instead of AP for my out of the country travel. Can we do that?

If you have valid H1 and your dependens have valid H4, then I suggest you use H1 to enter rather than AP.
If you use AP then you have use EAD to work and your H1 will be invalid.
You should have H1 stamping in your passport to enter, otherwise go to US consulate in your country for stamping.

Both H1 and AP

hi, now INS does allow you to travel along with H1 even thoough your 485 processing in going on... you dont have to get AP, unless until you have valid H1 status.
This is a new rule and earlier it was not there. this has beenimplemented recently.
