AP pending, wife left to India on family urgency

There seems to be a broad consensus (lawyers and applicants) that the AP needs to be approved when the applicant is in the US before it can be used.

Does anyone know why they have e and f on the I131 application? http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-131.pdf

e. I am outside the United States and I am applying for an advance parole document
f. I am applying for an advance parole document for a person who is outside the United States.

Can the OP use either of these options to apply for an AP for his wife?

Well, it is actually USCIS rules, not just broad consensus.

There is more than one kind of Advanced Parole. The most common one that we are familiar with is AP for I-485 applicants who wish to travel abroad without having their cases deemed abandoned. For this type of AP, it must be approved before travel. But there are other types of AP, for example, a foreigner who needs to travel to the US urgently (within a day or two) and cannot wait for standard visa processing times at their consulate (e.g. for a funeral, rescue a relative, etc etc) and so their US relatives can apply for AP for them to come immediately. These have absolutely nothing to do with adjustment of status applicants.
