AP or not AP?

I am actually a Canadian working in US under L1 visa with I485 pending, but I was born in China.

I am planning to take a trip to China at the end of the year. I currently on my second term of L1 and just got my L1 extension done - of course, I didn't get a visa as I have not traveled outside of States yet.

As the USCIS website, I don't really need AP to come back to USA as I have been maintaining my L1 status and have never changed job.

Here's the question. Do I need to apply for AP then? Where can I get an visa? Should I travel to Mexico just to get a visa stamp before my current AP goes out?

PS. travel with current AP does not void a pending AP application, right?

The only question I can answer...

travel with current AP does not void a pending AP application
YES. There was a clarification from USCIS to AILA about a few months ago that you can travel on your existing AP while your new one is pending approval. But you should return before the current one expires..

You're a Canadian. Not only do you not need a visa stamp, no Consulate will actually give you one.

I do need a visa to enter USA as a worker. If I enter as traveler or small business trip, I don't. I had a visa when I first got my L1A.
