AP is expiring soon ... Do I have to....

Q.1 My AP is expiring in two weeks. Do I have to renew BEFORE the present one expires?

I do not intend to leave country soon and thought I would wait for 485 approval which could be anytime soon.

Q. 2 If 485 gets delayed, can I apply for renewal AFTER the present AP expires?

Apply for new AP in anticipation of travel not current AP's expiry. APs need not be continuous.

I was worried. I thought that like EAD, AP needed to be continuous.
