AP expires during my travel abroad

Next month, I need to travel abroad on a project for a period of 5 months. My AP and EAD will expire during the end of the 4th month. I know I cannot enter without a valid AP.
Can I apply for a renewal and ask my roommate to mail it to me? or can I apply for a renewal now, even though it is nearly 6 months ahead?

Apply for a renewal now and don't leave until you get the new AP, which should be dated from the renewal date, not the expiry date of the previous one. Alternatively, continue as planned but return before the current AP expires and then go back on the new AP.

Leaving on one AP and returning on another is not allowed and could be construed as abandonment.
