AP experience at Chicago O'Hare Airport

I used AP to enter US on last Sat. This is my first time to use AP. The whole process only took 3 minutes. No secondary inspection. The officer at O'Hare airport asked me only one question- how do I apply for Green Card, and then stamped my passport and AP. But he returned all three copies of AP to me. I remember reading some article here that one copy of AP should be kept at P.O.E. Is this correct that the officer returned all three copies to me?

Re:AP Experience

Can you please tell me if they cheched your AP on the computer or anything else, to make sure it's valid?
I have an AP too, but my I485 will be withdrawn soon and I don't know for how long it's going to be valid after that.

I wouldn't count on the experience of one person being the normal way the process works. It sounds by your post that you're trying to slip under the radar. I know that when I travel, I've always been pulled into secondary inspection and they've always checked their computer. (I am a Canadian citizen so it's not a special registration thing).

When I entered with AP in LAX, there was no secondary inspection as such (maybe the reason was that there were 2 or 3 counters dedicated only for those traveling on AP - so they eliminated the secondary inspection and instead made it primary !!)

BUT, the officer did check his computer and am pretty sure he had my info in front of him -- I think he asked me a vague question like my SSN or mother's maiden name (go figure !) ... its very unlikely that they just let you go on AP w/o checking it in their system (given how everything is linked by your A#).

The officer retained one AP copy and gave me back one copy with the red parole stamp.

What is this secondary inspection which people keep talking about. Once while coming into JFK we were asked to goto a different room as the POE officer mistakenly thought my wife was out of status. In the other room there were other officers who asked a few questions and let us go. Is that secondary inspection or is it just that documents are checked for validiy ?

Secondary inspection is simply any additional action taken over and above being seen by the officer on the desk that everyone passes through. It is often the case that AP users are sent for secondary inspection to avoid delaying everyone else in the line since AP processing does take a bit longer than just a simple stamp. However, secondary inspection is also used for everything else that can't be handled by the desk officer, such as refusal of admission. I remember sitting in the secondary inspection area at JFK once waiting for my AP stamp and overhearing someone being refused admission for repeatedly working on a visitors visa in the past.
