AOS vs CP timelines

I am one of the lucky selectees for DV2011. Living in US, I received the envelope early, even though my CN is not very low, i.e. EU9xxx.

While I am reading on the various paperwork on the USCIS website, I am trying also to reach an educated decision on whether to go with the AOS or the CP method. Maybe forum members that went through either one of the two approaches in the past, can shed some light on the questions below.

First, it is my understanding that whatever method you choose, you are still bound by your CN becoming current before you can go for an interview, however, with the following important difference:

- for CP, you receive your interview date a few weeks before your CN becomes current, and you generally have your interview in the month when your CN becomes current, or the following month. Is this true?

- for AOS, you submit the i-485 package when your CN becomes current, but it takes some undetermined amount of time until you are scheduled for an interview. From my limited reading of other people's signatures, it seems that there are a few sub-steps to this entire process.

I have a number of questions. Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some answers.

1) For the AOS case, how long does it typically take from the time your number becomes current and you submit the i-485, until your interview date? Also, what are some worse case scenarios assuming your paperwork was complete (you did not have to resubmit your application)?

2) For both AOS and CP. Do they generally tell you on the spot the result of your interview, or do you have to wait for an answer by mail? If the latter case, how long does it take to receive an answer?

3) For both AOS and CP. They say you have to get a visa number before they are exhausted, and before the end of the respective fiscal year. Are you assigned a visa number once your interview receives a positive result, or those numbers get assigned later, when the GCs are issued?

4) For CP, do you have to take your medical exam in the country where you are going to have the interview, or can you have it in US (if you live in US and choose the CP method), and go with the medical results to the CP interview? I'm asking this, because if you can do your medical exam in US, that shortens the amount of time you have to spend on travel. I do not have that many vacation days , and it would make the CP method more attractive.

I will stop here for now. Other people could add more questions if they have any. Again, thanks for any eventual clarifications on these issues.

There are no straight fwd answers to most of your Q s. Dig a bit deep into the forum and you will find a better picture. You may have to spend a good 2-3 hrs or longer for you to get a good pic on your case from other ppl's past experience. Do not expect anyone to give you any blanket answer which will seemingly satisfy your case background.

as for # 3) in CP you get the visa number with the printing of the visa stamp. For AoS it is when the officer approves your case and when the approval/welcome notice is generated.

for # 4) You MUST do the medicals at home, not in US.

Hope this help but again as I said you will have to do lot of searching yourself. A diamond mine of info is burried in these forums, but unfortunately nothing is available in B&W.

Good Luck !

PS: Your number EU-9XXX is comparatively low and should be current within few months after DV-11 starts. IMO, provided all your documents, medicals and security clearance are clean...you should be fine with AoS. CP is generally quick, AoS resolution takes bit more time even after your number become current.

Here's a good starting point (make sure to send her a thank you message)

NuvF, I was not looking for somebody to provide all answers and tell me how to proceed.
I was more looking on collecting people's experiences with the time-lines, so I could make an informed decision.
I realize that there is a lot of such info throughout this forum and I am reading through it as well. But it will be significantly more than a few hours to comb through it. I already spent more than a few hours reading.

The post that you linked is very useful. Thanks for including it.
I was hoping for a different answer to question 4, but it seems like it is never the exact way one wants.

Check the signature time lines and you will see that your case# is low. The average time frame for AOS is 4 months and you are perfectly fine.

If something is not okay then you will be put on AP otherwise you will be told that you are welcome as a perminent residence to the USA and your passport will be stamped like it happened to my friend this year.

Which country are you from that you already received this case#?

I am from Romania, but I am in US on H1B. That's why I received my NL in the mail so early.

What worries me about the AOS the most is some unpredictable delay due to the FBI background check.
I am not worried about its results since I have a clean record and my current work required a security clearance, but I have read more than one story with people stuck in limbo due to the background check.
