AOS and in-state tuition

Guys,

I also posted this in I485 section

I'm currently on AOS (employment-based immigration, I485 filed in April 2002 - no 2nd FP btw). I'm working on my MBA in one of the business schools in Pennsylvania. The school rejected my application for in-state tuition (which is half of out-of-state tuition) on the grounds that I'm not a permanent resident, even though I've been in PA for more than 3 years, have been paying taxes, never changed a job etc. Is there any way for me to get in-state tuition other than to drop off and wait for my I485 to be approved? I have a feeling it's going to be at least half a year in the best-case scenario. I can't afford to pay that much, my savings are almost gone (I'm not eligible for any education loans, either)...

Thanks in advance.

well there are just legals rules. find the law and you will find the answer.

for eg, in wisconsin, as long as you came to wisconsin legally and have a husband/wife who is working full time, you can pay instate tuition as long as you didnt come to wisconsin just to study and have proof of living and paying taxes there even before the intent to study.

so if PA has such a rule, then your good. otherwise either pay up or wait if you can.

MBA with 485?

Hi costno:

I am interested in getting an MBA and am hoping to go to B School in 2005. I am currently getting ready to file my 140 and 485.

Can you tell me if you encountered any road blocks getting into B-School while your 485 is pending.

Did you join the part-time or the full-time program?

Your response will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Costno,

There is another thread on childrens education which i hope you have seen. People have posted extracts from FSA handbook that people in AOS can also be considered for FAFSA aid. Also you should be eligible for in-state tuition as you are for more than 3 years a resident. You have to fill out the residency forms along with application to qualify for in-state. Good luck.

Another option is citibank loan for short term till you get GC. Education are prime rate +0.25 %, payment starts after you graduate , repayment period is 12 years. Say a 10,000 $ loan would have to be paid in 144 months with monthly payment of $90. The only catch is that you need a citizen to sign as co-borrower, if you have friends/relatives can be worked out.
