I recently got married to a US Citizen on Feb 14th 2011. We are doing all the paper work for my AOS. I am on an H1B visa that expires in 2012. My employer is not good to me. As soon as the paper work is mail to USCIS and is being process can I quit my job? In other words while they look into my paper work can I stop working for the employer that holds my visa? What will happend to my status? Doing this will make me out of status? What are the consequences? Thank you!

Once you get the receipt for I-485, you can leave your employer. You will be under AOS ( Adjustment of Status ) and legal.

You can quit as soon as you get the I-485 receipt, but you have to wait for the EAD (2-3 months) before you can legally start working in another job.
