My F-1 visa expires in May. My I-20 also expires in May. however i am supposed to be a bridesmaid in a wedding in June. I am not done with my studies( i have an extra year) because i had changed my major so i have to apply for a new visa and I-20 to come back to school in August anyway. i was wondering though if there was any way that i can get an extension to stay for the wedding without having to go home and come back.
if i want apply for my extension now (to come back to school in August), can i do it from here or do i have to go home first?

you don't have to get a new visa just because an old one expires. As long as you extend your I-20 (status), you can be in the country legally.

yes, there is a difference between a status and a visa. As long as you are maintaining your status (not working illegally, extending I-20 or getting a new I-20), you can stay in the country legally and pretty much indefinitely.

Visa is just a permission to enter the US.
