hey,

i read on the travel.state.gov site that a canadian citizen doesnt need a passport for a TN visa.

Has anyone got a tn at a border crossing, land not air, without a passport?

You don't need a passport to get TN. That is correct. You need other proof of citizenship and photo ID.

has anyone tried this without a passport? i am wondering if the border guards will deny me because they think you do need a passport

I've known severa lTNers that, while being in TN for several years, are only now getting PP so they can fly.

So you can still get a TN at the border without a Passport, but probably not at airport.

thanks, i just called the border where i am going to get my TN and they said all you need is proof i was born in canada, so birth cert and photo id are fine

What POE was that? I am in US on H4 on Indian passport (I am a Canadian citizen now, not applied for Canadian passport yet). Can I go to a land POE, without a Canadian ppt, but my Canadian Citizenship card, and appear for my first TN?

This too should be fine. it has always been in the past and nothing has changed at the POEs with regards to passports.

Thanks NelsonA.
I have another related question though. Right now I am in US, so in order to apply for TN, do I need to 'cross' the border and enter US again from Canada, or thats not needed at all? I just gather my documents and drive to the POE (US Side) and apply/appear.

i have another question. do my wife and 2 year old daughter have to be present to receive their TD visas or can i just have their passports with me and once i get my tn i can also get the TD for them?

Your dependends have to be present to get the TD. U cannot apply on their behalf.

Like TN, TD is an entry status, thus the person must be entering US to get it, that means physically entering, not just their passports.

Alternatively, you could apply for TD extension by mailing an I-539 to USCIS, after your TN renewal.

TN - no passport

This is a very similar question to the ones above with a slight difference. I am a current TN-visa holder (Canadian) and I have to send my passport in to get it renewed. I originally applied for my TN using my Cdn passport. But since I won't have the passport for the next several weeks, if I want to drive over the border, can I present my Canadian birth cert, my U.S. driver's license and my I-94 card to get back into the U.S.?

Not much difference, really. Yes, you can.

This presumes however, that you have either 2 original birth certs or a birth cert and a citizenship card, since you need to send one of these with your passport renewal.
