Anyone done an expedited Cdn Passport in the last couple months?

Hi,

I apologize if this is an inappropriate post - this forum seems to have the most up to date info on just about everything...

I am still pondering whether to mail my life away to apply for my passport, or if expedited processing is available. I am considering going home to renew in person as expedited. The reason I am nervous is because (stupid me) has waited until close to mhen my passport expires to renew.

Has anoyone done the expedited (next day) service recently? Is 'having to travel back to the US to work at my job on TN status' a valid urgent travel reason?

I tried calling the main passport office the other day, and they couldn't even put me on hold. I'll try again, but if anyone has any recent experience with the times, I'd be interested. I'm planning on going to Calgary in July, my passport expires in June, deciding if I should go ahead and drop my package in the courier, or fly up and apply in person.

One last question - does anyone know if my filled out application with my US guarantor would be accepted in person, or if I would need to prepare a new application with a Candian guarantor?

Thanks for your help!

--- My wife tried getting her passport in 1 day - but she was told that it is up to the ppt officer's discretion - it was denied. But they told that they would give her in 48 hrs and they promptly did. This was 1 year ago. I am not sure if this will happen now, because of the rush to get the passports because of new US laws.

--- I wouldn't be surprised if they turn you down if you try to apply in person (in Calgary) with the form for "cdns residing in the US" having US guarantor's signature. I would fill out the usual form for the cdns living in Canada if I were to apply in person in the cdn passport office.

Experiences have varied on this:

When showing up at the local offices,
some have been told they CAN use the "resident in US form",
some have been told they MUST use the "resident in US form",
and some have been toild they MUST use the "regular Cdn form".

The best is to have a Cdn guarantor that matches the shorter american list.

The infor on the Cdn PP site is typical govt doublespeak.

"In person
----------
Canadians residing in the United States must send the application form by mail to our Gatineau office in Canada.

Note: If you submit your application in person in Canada, you will be required to appear in person both at time of submission of the application and at passport pick-up. You cannot have a third party submit an application, or pick-up a passport on your behalf."

On the one hand you MUST mail the right form, other other hand, you can bring it in person.

Amazing.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. I may actually get through to the passport office this time around...

Any other experiences are appreciated as well.

I love the specificity of the vagueness on the government websites. If I have gotten any new skills from working in the US and having to deal with issues of work permits and immigration is how to read such things and actually understand them.....

I just got off the phone with Passport Canada (only was about a half hour wait, which really surprised me since the other times I have tried I couldn't even get into the hold queue). I was told this regarding applying in person and expedited service:

If I have a plane ticket, plus a letter from my employer stating my reason for travel, I can get expedited (24 or 48 hour) service, or express service (1 week), but no guarantees (of course).... She did say that the officer makes the decision on whether the travel reason is valid, as per the webiste also, but she also didn't seem too concerned that I wouldn't be able to get the service. In my case, my urgent need to travel would be that my employer is in the US and expects me back in the office next week in Atlanta. That would be easy to document.

She also said to use the Canadian form and a Canadian guarantor. I believe what Nelson said is true above, that would only make sense that every possible outcome has been witnessed... So I think to be safe I would take my US forms that I have filled out, and a Canadian form filled out as well. "You mean I can't use the Canadian form? Well how about using THIS instead??" Only a little more hassle because I have to plan accordingly to get the photos and visit a Canadian guarantor and get to the passport office on a timely fashion so I don't miss too much work, have to travel too long, etc.

So now, do I drop the forms I have in the mail or book a plane ticket.... decisions... :)

Thanks again guys.
Dale.

Yeah you definatly don't want to do it by mail the normal way. I submitted mine in Jan and so far I haven't heard a single word since. The US passport site has a tracker and I wouldn't be surprised if I get that one (filed in Late Feb) before I get the Canadian one back. I'll have to look on the link to see if I can check the status on line at all...
