Folks,
My friend recently received approval for his GC, he is currently stuck in india for a couple of months due to a family situation. My Question is, is there a time limit from the date he was approved till the stamping. In other words for how long can he be in india and safely come back and get his passport stamped etc?

Thanks

There is no prescribed time limit but if someone does not get stamp for long time (I dont know what this long time is), USCIS may consider the case to be abandoned. I think 2 months should be OK. Usually most people get their stamping done from 15 days to a month. I doubt USCIS cares for another month. Just find out if his family situation may warrant him to stay longer then 2 months.

I would suggest that if he has a lawyer, his lawyer should contact USCIS and find out his other options, or atleast tell them that he is not coming immediately.

60-day limit

If I remember correctly (unfortunately I don't have the e-mail to confirm right now), my attorney had sent me an e-mail after my approval to get stamping done within 60 days. Else, INS may revert the case for security review and additional finger-printing and security review may be requested. I am almost sure it is 60 days or it could be 90 days after the notice sent, but there is definitely a time-limit. If possible have your friend confirm with an attorney.

Good Luck
