Hotels within walking distance

Hi:

I have an appointment for Jan 10th in Montreal. H-1 Reval for me and H4-F1 for my wife. From my research, I found the following two hotels within walkable distances to the U.S. Consulate.

Days Inn: 215 Rene Levesque Est
Econo Lodge: 2060 Dominique St

Do you know if they issue the Visas, do they give it to you on the same day or next day. Our appointment letters say, Visas, if granted will be generally issued the next business day at 3:00 P.M.

Anyone, who got VISA from Montreal, please post.

Greyhound terminal etc

Hi folks,
Someone help me out in locating the address of Greyhound terminal - whether it is near to the Consulate? i.e. I have the Greyhound bus reaching at 6 AM, I want to know how far is the above two mentioned hotels from the Greyhound terminal so that I can quickly shower and walk to the Consulate. Mapquest somehow is not responding to the Consulate address and the hotel addresses. Helppppppp this alone soul......

Greyhound terminal is within walkable distance too

It is at the most half a mile beween any two points, i.e, Consulate, Greyhound bus stop, and Hotel. Mapquest worked fine for me. Here are the addresses I typed in mapquest.

Addresses:

1155 St. Alexander St (Consulate)
2060 St Dominique Rue (Econo Lodge)
505 Boulevard De Maisonnevue East (Greyhound terminal)

I typed Montreal for City and QC for province. Hope it will work for you now.

BTW, when are you going? Do you know if the visa is issued, do they issue it on same day or the next day? My appointment letter says visas are generally issued the next day at 3:00 P.M. Please let me know if you know anything?

Thanks.

Thanks Shyam.......

Hi Shyam,
Thanks for your reply. I am yet in the planning stages as my old employers visa is valid till Mar 2, 2002. I plan to do an online appointment - what do you suggest is best? I also just know by reading at the website nvars.com that the Visa if approved is issued on next business day.

By the way Mapquest is not returning the addresses & is requiring the zip code. Could you please for my sake mention the zip codes for the Consulate, Econolodge & Greyhound terminal. I appreciate it and thanks a lot in advance.....Have you booked your room in advance? Do you know what\'s the trend - whether the rooms are full or vacant most of the time? If possible, also provide the zip code of Days Inn.

Here are some answers

I made my appointment online. It took a while, but it worked. I got my appointment letter one week later in the mail.

About the hotels, I do not know how busy they usually are. I made my reservation one week back. I had no problem in getting a room.

Here are the zip codes you need.

Days Inn: H2X 1N7
Econo Lodge: H2X 2X1
U.S. Consulate : H5B 1G1 (not sure on this one)

Hope it helps. I am leaving to Montreal tomorrow. I will post the details after once come back.

Got our Visas

Hi everyone:

I got my H-1 revalidation and my wife got a new F-1 from Montreal on Jan 10th. Here are some of the details tha might help people who are planning to go to Montreal.

(1) Made appointment at US consulate in Canada through the website nvars.com. (You have an option of printing a copy of the appointment letter once you make the appointmnet, actual appointment will come in mail in about a week).

(2) Applied for a visitors visa to Canada at New York. We told the purpose is to get our visas stamped in US consulate. They will ask for the appointment letters. We only had printed copies at that time. That was sufficient.

(3) I went by bus to Montreal. At the border they look for Canadian visa and they asked the purpose of my visit. I told I have appointment at US consulate. They asked for appointment letters. They asked where will I be staying in Canada. I said Econo Lodge. I left my old and new (one that came with H-1 extension) I-94s inside the passport. They did not take anything. They have just put a stamp in the passport with the date of entry to Canada.

(4) I went to the US consulate in the morning half an hour before my appointment time. They checked the passports, appointment letters, and forms DS-156s at the entrance. They asked what visas we are applying for. We said H-1 and F-1. Then they gave me a form (only for H-1s it seems), asked me to read, fill it. Then they asked me to go to 19th floor window 6A. That form basically had what documents are needed and in which order we should keep them. Note: It says they need Old I-797s from all the previous employers (if applicable). If you were on F-1 before, they also ask for I-20, degree certificate, and transcripts. They we both went to window 6A on 19th floor as told. The lady there checked our passports, Forms DS 156s, photographs. She again asked what visas we are applying for. She gave everything back. Then she took $90.00 cash from us. she gave us a number and asked us to wait in the waiting area. When our number was called (after a wait of 5 minutes), we both went up to the particular window we were called at, and the lady there asked for all the documents that she will be needing. She kept all the documents and asked us to wait in the area until our names were called. After about 30 to 45 minutes our names were called, this time separately. They asked me what company I work for and what are my general job responsibilities. He then gave me a piece of paper and asked me to pay $ 75.00 at a particular window and bring a reciept back to him. After giving him the receipt, he gave a me one more paper stub and asked me come back at 3:00 P.M. (same day) and pick up my passport from downstairs. He gave all my documents back excepting the passport. For my wife, they kept passport and I-20.

(5) We went back at 3:00 P.M and picked our passports, made sure everything was correct in the new stamp and then left the place.

(6) At the border when we were returning, they checked the visas and for me they said I do not need any new I-94. For my wife, since there is a change in classification, they gave a new I-94 (they charged $6.00). They again asked whom I work for and that\'s it. We just came back after a successful trip.

We just walked from one place to other in Montreal. All the streets are well named and there is no room for confusion if you have a map of the area.

Any questions? Please post them. I will try my best to answer. People using this site have provided me with a lot of useful information and I hope I can do the same to others.

Shyam, 3 more specific questions

Shyam,
Thanks so much for your generous and such detailed reply. I appreciate you very much. May the lord be generous to you & your family to get your Green Card easily.

I have 2 additional questions:
1) I need the phone no. of Econo Lodge so that I can book the room in advance.
2) My company will be writing the corporate check for the H1 VISA. Reading from Rajiv Khanna\'s revalidation section (www.immigration.com/newsletter/revalidationinfo.html), I understand that it is $45 + $75(Reciprocity fee). But from your reply, you have mentioned different rates....Please clarify on this.
3) I have not been able to find the application fee for the CANADIAN TOURIST VISA. As my company will write the corporate check, I need to know this.

I once again appreciate in advance your reply to the above 3 questions.

No Title

But from your reply, you have mentioned different rates....Please clarify on this.

$45 and $75 is correct. When I said $90, it was total for 2 persons. I think $45 has to be cash only. If possible, take $75 also in cash.

3) I have not been able to find the application fee for the CANADIAN TOURIST VISA. As my company will write the corporate check, I need to know this.

If you want the single entry visa it is US $50, If you want a multiple entry visa it is US $75. I took a single entry visa. Note: single entry visa is usually (in my case, atleast) given for a validity period of 1 month from the date of application. So, make sure you won\'t apply for a canadia visa before 30 days of your appointment at the US consulate.

GOOD LUCK

I took them, they did not ask

It was strange but they did not even ask the letter from employer. They did ask for I-129 application package and copy of approved LCA. However, I would certainly recommend everyone to take both letter and pay stubs.

My H-1 extension was through the same employer. May be that is why they did not ask. I am not sure.

H-4 to F-1

Hi! Shyam,

I have been reading experience and inforamtion that you provided. Its a great help to me and to others in the same boat.

I am trying for my wife to get F-1 visa stamped from H-4.

Some more to ask from you:
1. What about your wife -when she was at the interview window. Was she asked a lot and what actually she was asked mainly about returning to home country,
2. Didn\'t they ask why she is converting to F-1 visa when she is already eligible to study on H-4.
3. Apart from I-20, W-2, bank stmts., letter from employer, and recent pay stubs, is there any other doc. that needs to be taken with us.
4. How long does it take to get Canadian Visa. What is the process.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.
Amit
