"Any other names you have used N-400" item

Hi everyone,

I will be filing my N-400 soon. The item that asks whether or not you have used other names is confusing to me. I do use a nickname that my friends call me and occassionally I provide that name when I apply for a store discount card, for example. However, on all my official documents I use the same official name. There was one time back when I was a teenager (before I was even a PR) that I provided my nickname on an I-94. Should I list that nickname? Thanks much for your input.

If you've used the name on an official document (I-94 being one), you should list it on the N-400, even if for no reason other than preventive measures.

Do you think that this will in some way affect my name check processing time? Are they going to be checking both my official and unofficial name? That is just my only concern...I have no criminal history, background - the only thing I have is a $200 speeding ticket which I paid - that is all.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I have numerous traffic tickets myself (all of which I paid), and my last name has been spelled 3 different ways on various documents. They will definitely check both your official and unofficial name, but it's better to be honest and upfront with them than risk a possible delay in your application process.
