Has anyone had any luck trying to expedite the process of getting a Refugee Travel Document?

Is there any type of situation that would warrant quicker turn-around on this document....

Your comments as always are greatly appreciated....

Just received e-mail

I received an update on my UCIS portfolio that my RTD has just been mailed to me. My notice date was January 4th, 2004. The current processing date listed on their site is January 24th. So I guess it is a 6-7 month turnaround.

A friend who applied in February mailed them a letter of expedition a couple of weeks ago. He hasn't heard anything back yet, but he told me he did the same last year and received his renwed RTD within a month.

It depends..

I sent them a letter (explaining why I needed it fast with a proof) along with a self-stamped express mail envelope a few years ago. It used to take 3 months for processing. I got it back in about a week!

What kind of explanation did you use to expedite RTD?

bringslite,

What kind of explanation did you use to get the RTD expedited?

Is vacation before the end of September (summer months) a justifiable explanation?

Let me know,

Thanks

PEDRO

Hi PEDRO...

In my case I was supposed to meet a family member who was getting medical treatment overseas (not my original country). I sent them a letter form the hospital indicating that my relative was getting treatment there. I was his only family.

I also had another friend who was trying to make it for a funeral of one of his relatives in Europe. He only sent the INS a letter indicating that, and he got it faster.

I guess, try to come up with a strong reason (i.e. school/business/funeral/etc..), anything other than vacation.

Good luck!

pedrop,

Last year, I requested for expediting my travel document twice, but I received no answer.

I have a feeeling that vacation will not genereally be granted. I was trying to meet my parents which I hadn't seen for 8 years in the Netherlands, and we have brought our air tickets. That reason was not good enough for granting my expedite request until one of my congress members contacted the NSC on my behalf. I received my RTD shortly after that.

Since this year is an election year, you might have a better luck asking your congress members for help.

yeah, sure, vacation is not good enough. After all, we are refugees and we are not supposed to enjoy our lives or God forbid have any fun. We should consider ourselves lucky to be here.

It has to be a work related request. i.e. my company is shipping homes to China and i need to train prisoners who will do the jobs Americans do. Thank you Bush

We all should be thankful that we get a document with U.S name on it!! .....Immigriation is slow but they are also NOT Unfair..they RTD issue date is the week before they mail your passport. Its always almost 1 year...

Several weeks ago someone was arrested in Ohio for plotting to blow up shopping malls. He was an asylee who apparantly used a RTD to go abroad and received Al Quada training. Rather than whining, we should show some understanding that the US needs to be vigilant about terrorism.

As much as we all condemn and hate terrorism, but something we learned from the justice system in this country that, a person is considered innocent until proven guilty. So, please do not sound like a right-winger and label someone as a criminal before they are proven to be so, in a court of law.

What’s not unfair!

What’s not unfair about treating refugees better the asylees when it comes to I-485?

What's not unfair about brining in some 50,000 people to this country, with a simple qualification as a high school diploma, while we work hard and pay taxes to support such programs, yet we are forgotten when it's comes to getting a legal status?

What's not unfair when a woman comes to this country illegally and then gives birth to what would be a USC and we have to pick up the tab. Go and see how European immigrations work!

Do not get me wrong, I am very grateful to this country for offering me a safe haven, and I still believe it’s the best in the world, but some of the people who run it do not have any common sense.

Re: Any luck Trying to Expedite Rtd

Last year I needed to go to the Down Under for my sis's wedding. I underestimated the amount of time it took to do RTD.

So, I wrote a letter to my local Congressman asking for expedited request (attaching wedding invite and the letter from my sis explaining that she is my only sis and that I represented teh family for the wedding).

After a lot of prayer and that letter - the RTD came, ahead of schedule. It was anyone's guess whether BCIS approved the expedited it b/c of the letter or not. I was just super grateful to know I got it.

So I think wedding is quite a valid reason. Vacation is definitely not.

Good luck!
