Any gay person from Singapore granted asylum in USA?

"gay" not eligible for asylum

At present, Immigration Law does not acknowledge "gay" or "sexual orientation" as one of the persecuted groups for asylum.

This is a very complicated and gray area of the law. Some "gay" applicants have been successful in the past. But this administration is far less sympathetic to this sort of applications.

I agree with Gilbert, use a attorney ...

gayman, just because a person is gay doesn\'t entitle him, or her, to asylum in the US. Sexual orientation is not a valid ground for asylum in the US. This is unlike several countries where gay citizens can actually sponsor their partner for immigration. However, if you have a well-founded fear of persecution or torture, based purely on your sexual orientation, and you are able to show documentary, or physical proof of this, then there is a possibility that your case will be considered. It is going to be a long a complicated process - success is not guaranteed - and Gilbert\'s advice on using an attorney should be followed. They are actually attorneys who specialize in this area. Are they particulars in your own case that you think would make you a suitable candidate for asylum? However, you must realize that just because you are gay, and you want to immigrate to the US, is not sufficient grounds for obtaining asylum. Good luck.

Gilbert is right. This is a grey area. If you can find well documented cases (reported by CNN, AIUSA, UN, etc) of gay people in Singapore being persecuted because of their sexual orientation you can apply for asylum. But applying will not guarantee you an automatic approval. I think the grounds on which one can apply for asylum are fear of persecution based on religion, ethnicity, political belief, or association in an ethnic, social, or political group. Read the asylum policy for more details.

Your case some what resembles the case of a group of chinese asylum seekers who applied for asylum on the ground of Chinese government\'s birth control policies. The asylum law does not cover persecution based on birth control polices. So the case was debated for a long time in the US Congress. The applicants were locked up in an immigration detention center while the case was pending. The end result of this case was also unclear. But a good asylum lawyer should know the story of this case.
You will need a good asylum lawyer who is willing to do alot of research work for you.
