alimony-related question during natz interview

Had a natz interview in NYC today. Have a child from prior marriage in different country. The Officer asked whether I pay alimony. I said no, and I was not required to. There's no court order that states that I have to pay child support, just a divorce decree showing I am divorced from my ex. I stated that even if I wanted to pay alimony for that child, I could not, because my ex would not take money from me. The Officer said the decision would be mailed, and not soon. Bad sign? What can I do now?

Thank you!

Don't worry, decision cannot be made means your case details must be looked into further. In the mean time be patient and inquire after 30-45 days if you haven't received a decision.

You will get a letter asking to get a notarized/sworn affidavit type letter from your ex about the child support issue.
Sometimes child support order is separate and is not part of the divorce decree if it is filed after divorce, so USCIS is just not going to take your word for it and will need something in black and white before they will schedule you or the Oath.
Child support/Alimony issues are considered very important in establishing the GMC by USCIS.

Can the officer just deny the case, based on the interview, without sending a ltr requesting an affidavit from my ex? Can I take the initiative and mail in additional docs in support of my claim that I am not required to pay alimony? I do not think my ex will agree to cooperate... Thank you.

The IO wouldn't deny case unless you purposely withheld information.
It's not a sure thing that they will send you letter requesting additional evidence. In fact it would surprise me if they did since the IO didn't make an issue of it at interview. There's no need for you to send in a letter from your spouse at this point. Be patient and you'll get an answer soon.
