How long can you stay outside the country on a conditional green card before you have to come back to the states?

Six months to cover all requirements. Then you need to stay in the US for at least 6 months before traveling again.
I am assuming we are not utilising a re-entry permit here.

I'm not sure what a re-entry permit is, but I'm gonna say no. I have a two year green card. I'm just wondering after I'm granted my 10 year card, is it possible to look for a job outside the USA, and be able to come in and out after certain periods of time

Employment outside the US (other than short-term contract work) for a non-US company is grounds for revoking your green card for abandonment of residence.

Do you really want to live in the US on a permanent basis? If not, save yourselves the cost and effort of trying to keep your status intact.
