After 485 approval...

What happens if someone gets a 485 approval, but does not go for stamping? Is the petition considered abandoned?

There\'s no requirement to get your passport stamped. Although you probably would want evidence of your new status in the US, since your old papers are now null and void.

Is it possible to withdraw the petition/cancel at this point in case the person does not want the 485 approval anymore?

I think you do not come under LPR (Lawful Permanent Resident) status unless you get your PP stamped. Also, you may not receive our plastic cards unless you stamp your PP. Once you receive your plastic cards you need not have a stamp in you PP to enter US legally.
