Hello all:

I was filling up the Application for Naturalization form N400 and I had the following question about Item 8 - Have you ever been a member of or associated with any organization, association, fund foundation, party, club, society, or similar group in the United States or in any other place?

I understand membership, but I am not sure how you would define association. If you give donation to an organization does it mean you are associated with it. If you attended a party or a meeting organized by an organization would that make an association? Some organization would give you membership if you donate them money without any intention of becoming member and not having any other relationship other than donating some money every year. Would that be an association?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

Being assocaited with an organzation implies you are a member or follower of that organization. Simply donating to an organization does not automaticaly associate you with it.

What USCIS is looking for here is to make sure you disclose any membership or association with organizations that would otherwise make you ineligible for naturalization. If you disclosed that you donated to Al-Qeada but never attended any of their meetings, you would be considered to have been assocaited with them and your application would likely be denied.

good explanation by Bob. I will add on other side ,,,how the organization treat you from association perspective...if the organization treats you as an associate member /etc,,,then probably answers is YES.

No one cares about this category. If the organization is bad, you kill your case by disclosing it,
if the organization is good, then it does not make any difference you disclose it or not.

To make matter simple, I would not bother to mention academic and professional associations,
let alone HOA
