Dear LucyMo

My girlfriend from Poalnd won the lottery. I am currently working in the US on an H1-B Visa.

My Questions:
1. Can I be her sponsor and provide an I134 for her or does it have to be a US Citizen or a Green card holder.

2. Can more than two people be sponsors for her. My friend who is a greencard holder also wants to provide her with sponsorship.

Would appreciate your advice.

1. Yes.
2. It would be better if your friend provide it.

My lawyer told me that I need to wait until I get my green card before I could sponsor my mother-in-law for the DV lottery. If you don't answer either question 1a, 1b, 1c, or 1d, on the I-134 application then that might set off a flag with the officer, and probably the officer would probably deny the I-134. Again this might vary depending on the specific consulate / service center you are applying at.

Yes, but she better be ready to explain her relationship to this person at the interview. My mother-in-law was repeatedly grilled on who I am to her to ensure that I would honestly be a person willing to put my financial situation on the line for her. They try to weed out sponsors that were "paid" to be a sponsor.

Although both my wife and I gave affidavits for her mother, the officer only looked at mine, which was the better of the two.
