Ok, just a quickie:

My future wife (USC) is making now a decent living (just over 125% of poverty level) since the beginning of the year, yet her tax return from last year showed close to no income.

As proof of employement and - most importantly: proof of of her declared "annual income", is it enough to just attach her recent pay stubs, and if so, how far back?

Or do IOs usually ask through RFE for say, past 2 or 3 years tax returns?

Recent pay stubs should be fine. Letter from employer would help as well especially if you are not in a position to show copies of tax return. Instructions to 864 (Page 7) do mention pay stubs for last 6 months but I have heard from a neighbor that last one or two months of pay stubs worked in his case.

thanks for the tip. Yet, on page 8 of i-864 (page 8 / article 25), it says the Federal Income Tax Return (IRS) transcript is supposed to be provided with the form. Is it really mandatory or does that mean it's either pay-stubs OR the tax return? are you somehow implying that the pay stubs should be enough?

Transcripts are not mandatory. It is either tax return transcripts or copy of individual tax returns with W2/1099. I am going to submit a letter from employer (company letterhead with address and phone nos, date of joining, title, annual salary) and IRS tax return transcripts for 2008,2007,2006. I think that should suffice. I thought 6 months of paystubs will make my package too bulky!!
