Affidavit of Support and Marriage Fraud

I've been asked to sponsor a relative's immigrant spouse by signing an Affadivit of Support. I'm familiar with the responsibilities and am comfortable with them, however I am concerned about my responsibility in any potential fraud investigation or, worse, persecution.

I have no reason to suspect them of fraudulence but they are young and, well, you know... I'm willing to take responsibility for some minor financial burdens that may come about, but any sort of fraud investigation and especially conviction could severely damage my career.

Am I completely separate from those proceedings, should they happen? Or am I potentially just as guilty/liable as any other party found guilty/liable?

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're not signing an affidavit saying that they have a bona fide marriage, I don't see how they can hold you liable for their sham marriage just because you signed the Affidavit of Support. You're only pledging the financial support, you're not making a statement about the state of their marriage.
