Advice: H1 to B2 (then to H1)

I am looking for some advice as I transition between jobs.

I am Canadian and I am on an H1B. My old company will be laying me off at month's end.

Should I file a Change of Status to a B2 visitors visa while I am job hunting? If I am lucky enough to secure a new position quickly, would I still be able do an H1 transfer, or would the COS filing invalidate my H1?

Thank you for your insights,

If U do a H1 to B2, the next h1 will be B2 to H1 (U can file such app only after 3-6 months after b2 approval) and U can work only after H1 is approved. Since U are a canadian, U need not risk such silly transfers.
U can either go to canada and come back into US after U get a job (after filing H1 transfer) or switch to TN visa while coming back.

Thanks Jaxen,

I realize I can do the TN route (H1-B2, then if new job, TN). My exploration was more along the lines of:

I file an H1 to B2 to stay in status.
I manage to secure a job relaively quickly (30 days)
Could I then cancel the H1 to B2, and do an H1 to H1 instead.

That is, is the initial H1 to B2 request non-revocable?

Thanks in advance,

If you do H1 to H1 with premium processing you can risk withdrawing the h1 to b2 application. I doubt you will be able to do that before getting the receipt for h1 to b2. Although seemingly easy and doable from your situation, I have seen this route not work out for many in similar situation.
